How to Repair Parking Brake Cables

The basic steps for replacing a cable are very simple. Remove the parking brake lever and inspect the cable. If it sticks, you'll need to apply lubricant and remove the rear brake to identify the problem. The process of identifying a broken cable may take some time, but if you have the proper tools and techniques, replacing a broken cable is relatively easy. Listed below are some of the steps involved.

First, disassemble your vehicle. Generally, it is necessary to remove the brake line boot before attempting to remove the cable. Be sure to remove all mounting hardware before removing the cable. Next, unscrew the retaining clip from the caliper. You'll have to loosen the bolts and unscrew the mounting bracket. Then, gently separate the parking brake cable from the caliper. If the cable does not come out easily, replace the cable and the line boot.

Next, remove the center console. In most cases, a parking brake cable can be replaced easily at home. Most vehicles have a simple adjusting mechanism. To replace a parking brake cable, you need to disassemble the parking brake mechanism. Once you've disconnected the cable, follow the cables until you reach the brake mechanism. To make sure the cables are properly aligned, push the button on the center console three times.
